I’ve always wanted to stay in a castle. Castello di Monterado was such a great space. A tiny castle I’ll grant you but so well renovated and maintained. I imagine weddings happening here. It’s so picturesque.
I wanted to find a place where I wasn’t on the ground floor for a change given I can’t do stairs. Bingo! It has a lift that can fit my small portable mobility scooter. We stayed 4 nights.

You need to drive to get here. It’s not on a train line and it’s in an extremely tiny village. You can just chill out here. It’s a quiet village. We went off season so not many people around too.
This place is about 15 minutes inland from the east coast. We headed west from the town of Cesano. Off season the room rate is incredibly reasonable. We had breakfast included.
They serve breakfast and dinner at the castle only. You won’t be disappointed but it is more the food situation for lunch time. It is such a small town we only found one spot to eat during the day so plan out your day trips to cater for any lunch time needs, remembering that siesta starts in rural towns generally around 11.30-12.00. Alternatively you could stay at one of the few apartments they have on the estate.
Accessibility
When I discovered they had a lift in this place I was thrilled. I get around on a walking frame but with the set up here I could leave my walker at the room and scooter down to the breakfast room. If I chose the walking frame it was still within a 100 metre distance and it opened up the opportunity of sitting on one of the balconies that had a few stairs to get up to. A totally different vista.
I went to the pool on my mobility scooter down a trail that was pointed out to us. Otherwise you go down a flight of stairs. It’s doable with the mobility scooter but you need someone with you as the trail is not sealed, it is a little steep at one section. Worth it though.
The pool looked very inviting but just a bit to chilly for me to tackle in May. From a mobility standpoint it didn’t have any bars to hang on to get in and out but you could probably wall walk in at one end that is near the change rooms.
I never give up on having adventures even if I can’t get around like I used to.
Ciao for now.
