Travels with my scooter – The importance of a rehab gym

Rehab gyms are foundational to my journeys.

I bumped into a couple of the Exercise Physiologists from my rehab gym at Sydney airport. We couldn’t help but to get a pic. It was so unexpected to see them.

Stay strong
People keep asking me how I do it. How do I navigate travel with mobility issues. I didn’t realise it was a big deal. I couldn’t do it well if I didn’t have a strong weekly focus on strength training. I do that at my local rehab gym.

If it wasn’t for rehab gym facilities I couldn’t be having adventures on my scooter anywhere as much as I do. I wouldn’t have the strength to get up that couple of stairs on the bus for the wedding we just went to. Strength training is essential in my mind. I can’t get around like other people but I can try to stay strong.

You need to be really careful about using a mobility scooter all the time. It’s great for being able to get around easier. It’s great for your mental health to be out and about. It’s not great for your muscles. It’s not great for your bones.

There is always a background narrative that brings us to a place. My rehab gym is a big part of that background for Travels with My Scooter. At the gym their advice to me has always been maintain, maintain, maintain.

I may not be able to do what able bodied people do but I’ll do my darndest to keep as strong as possible.
