My mobility scooter has taken me far and wide but it wasn’t always that way. I resisted so much getting one. I would look at them and think ‘not a chance’. What are they thinking, an office chair on 4 wheels, bright colours and a flag that sticks out like a sore thumb?
Truth is I’ve pushed back on every piece of mobility equipment I’d ever needed. It’s always taken me a while to come around. First my walking stick, then my walking frame. I think that’s all par for the course tho’. It was me coming to grips with my own mortality.

So here I am on a holiday to South Australia. No scooter even contemplated at this stage. It’s around 2019. I’m just standing at a carpark by a vast and desolate beach while my friends go exploring.
When I think about it now it strikes me just how vulnerable I was. I will never let myself get into this kind of predicament again. I’m on my own and with no licence I can’t even drive away if I need to.
Freedom of a scooter
Logic prevails. Hell, I walked so slow…and I still do. I cringed at the idea of the scooter but also realised that if I wanted to get around at more than a snails pace I needed a mobility scooter. So glad I came to grips with it all. There’s such a sense of freedom with a mobility scooter. Sure you must ensure you are mixing it up with regular exercise to stop muscle wastage but I reckon 2-3 sessions at the gym ticks the box.
I originally trialled bucket loads. You have to have a big one so you can do the hills the OT said. It needs a big engine. LOL, it would have helped if they mentioned it needs to fit in your apartment too.
See Travels with my Scooter – Hanging to get Home about that saga.
SupaScootaHD
We just happened across my scooter at a suburban mobility place later on down the track. I’d never seen anything like it before. It had the grunt to do hills but it was portable. I was sold on it as soon as I heard that their mother-in-law had travelled all around Italy on it. Bingo, I’m in!

Customising
I took off the arms so it didn’t look like an office chair YES. It had no reversing signal YES, an excellent turning circle YES. No bright colours YES. Twin engines for hills YES. Portable YES
I’ve never looked back.
